It is rare to find a restaurant that serves authentic Mongolian cuisine. Rock Salt KL is an award-winning restaurant and one of the first restaurants in KL that brought its food culture from Mongolia to KL. They also offer a fusion of Asian and Western cuisine to their customers. Their Must-Try Signature gives you a fun cooking experience on a salt block right on your table and you get to pick the ingredients that you like!

To celebrate New Year, I had decided to try out their festive New Year Menu (RM198 per pax) as attached above instead of going for their signature dish. The first dish is Amuse Bouche- Wild Salmon Roe Croquette, Bread & Habanero Butter. The breadsticks were crispy and the croquette was quite filling with bursting flavors. The starter was Foie Gras, Mascarpone Cheese, Raspberry Compote & Snow Pearl. It was like a fancy salad topped with premium ingredients: foie gras, salmon roe & caviar. The combination was great and well-balanced with savoury, sweet and sour taste.

Next, we had Soup- Miso Crab, Abalone & Clam Chowder, Tarragon Infused & Herring Roe. I loved the soup, it reminded me of the clam chowder I had back in USA. Very flavorful, filled with lots of clams but I didn't quite like the texture of the miso crab. Then, a tiny glass of Sorbet was served, I think the idea was to boost our appetite.

Before I had the main course, I was feeling half full already. For the main course, I chose NZ Rack of Lamb (Pepper Crust Lamb Rack served with Truffle Mashed Potato & Pineapple Mint Sauce). The Pineapple Mint sauce was interesting and I quite liked the Truffle Mashed Potato because the taste was quite strong and creamy. However, I think the lamb wasn't grilled properly with some parts charred and it tasted burnt. I preferred the French Duck Breast- Air Flown Seared Duck Breast with Roasted Romanesco Cauliflower & Mango Sauce. The duck breasts were tender and well-balanced with a little fat so it wasn't rough. It would be better if the cauliflower tasted less salty. Lastly ,we had Genmaicha Asa-Midori Mousse & Coconut Pandan Cremeux as dessert. As a fan of matcha, obviously I liked this dessert and it wasn't sweet at all.

Overall, they were super generous with the portion from the first course to the last course, including dessert! I was totally stuffed after completing the course. It was a pleasant dining experience with good food in a warm atmosphere. I would appreciate more if the waiter could introduce the dishes while serving them to us. Hopefully, I will visit them again to try out their signature rock salt dish.
